Admiral of the Fleet, 1st Earl Beatty (1871-1936)
A life sketch for the painting of a group of officers, 'Naval Officers of World War I', 1921, at the National Portrait Gallery, (NPG1913), by Sir Arthur Stockdale Cope. This sketch is a half-length portrait of David, first Earl Beatty, facing left, and wearing undress uniform. He received the surrender of the German fleet in 1918, and was promoted First Sea Lord by the time of this portrait. The other officers in the finished portrait include Sir Robert Keith Arbuthnot, Bt & Sir Horace Hood & Sir John Michael De Roebeck, Bt & Roger Keyes, first Baron Keyes & Sir Cecil Burney, Bt & David Beatty, first Earl Beatty & Sir Trevylyan Napier and Louis Alexander.
