Admiral Sir Arthur William Moore (1847-1934)

A three-quarter length portrait to left in an admiral's frock coat and wearing the stars of the G.C.B. and G.C.V.O. Moore holds a telescope in his right hand and his left holds the hilt of his sword. On a table behind him are a number of charts and dividers. The artist has signed and dated the portrait in a corner of the chart on the table. At the taking of the Suez Canal in 1882 Moore was the commander in the 'Orion' which played a leading role. He was a Lord Commissioner of the Admiralty from 1898-1901, Commander in Chief at the cape 1901-1904, number two in the Channel Fleet 1904-1905, commander in Chief in China 1906-1908 and at Portsmouth 1911-1912. The painting dates from this last period and is signed and dated 'E.I. van Someren 1913'.
