Admiral Sir George Strong Nares KCB (1831-1915), Arctic explorer and commander of 'Challenger'
A three-quarter length portrait photograph of Captain George Strong Nares, sitting angled slightly to the right (left as you view the image) with his arms folded across his chest. This photograph was taken prior to, or during, the scientific circumnavigation by HMS Challenger (1858). It features in ALB0859 and ALB0175. The copy negative was made from the print in ALB0175. The caption in ALB0859 retrospectively records "Sir G S Nares, KCB", an award that he received on returning from the Polar Expedition in 1876.
