Admiral Sir Richard Goodwin Keats. G C B. Governor of the Royal Hospital, Greenwich

This is engraved from Jackson's oil painting of about 1817 (BHC2975). Keats (1757-1834) had a very active career in both American and French Wars and became Governor at Greenwich in 1821 as a vice-admiral, rising to admiral by seniority in 1825. When he died in 1834 his early naval friend, the 'sailor king' William IV, commissioned a bust of him by Chantrey in his memory which still stands in the Chapel (see PAI8792), paired with one by Behnes commemorating his successor as Governor (1834-39), Sir Thomas Masterman Hardy. He is shown here wearing the sash and star of the GCB and a captain's medal for his part as flag-captain to Sir John Duckworth at the Battle of San Domingo in 1806.
