An English fourth-rate in light airs
Image information
An English fourth-rate in light airs
The drawing shows a fourth-rate seen from slightly above the starboard beam. The ship looms large in the foreground. In the centre of the composition is a boat pulling away from the main ship. There is a stern view of another ship in the background on the right. The top of the drawing has been cut off which means that the fore and main topmastheads are not shown.
The drawing may have been executed on the occasion of the King's visit to the 'Tiger' in 1681 and has been dated to 1681 on this basis.
Willem van de Velde, the Elder
