Anchor model

Scale: Unknown. A model of a portable anchor, circa 1857, made in wood with brass square-headed bolts and fastenings. The shank and arms are made up from a series of flat sections, all of which are held together by a nut and bolt on the shank, another on the crown and four under the palms. The flat sections of the shank are held apart by a pair of spacers at the junction of the bolt. The top of the shank has been drilled to take a circular-shaped stock, above which is a smaller aperture for the ring. The horseshoe-shaped arms swivel either side of the shank and are complete with a pair of flat palms. The spacers of the sections that make up the arms are the bottoms of the sections that form the shank. On the underside of the arms towards the palms is a pair of lugs or barbs for additional grip on the seabed. There is a paper label applied to the shank on which is handwritten in black ink: 'Recd in the model room from Mr Edges Room, Admiralty 30 Apr 1857'. Written directly on the shank beside the paper label: 'V/F 200.'
