Armed schooner 'Globe' 1840

Scale: 1:48. A contemporary full hull plank on frame model of the armed schooner 'Globe' (1840). The hull is fitted with two masts complete with running and standing rigging, while on deck is fitted a windlass, after cabin hatch, stern grating for the helmsman, the whole of which is mounted on a wooden pair of crutches. The 'rake' or angle of the masts is towards the stern and originates from the fast American schooners that operated along the East Coast and Caribbean during the late 18th century. These vessels were used for a variety of duties including coastal patrols, carrying of despatches and work for the Revenue Service, in particular for the prevention of smuggling. Although the name 'Globe' appears on the stern, it has not been possible to identify this model with a particular vessel.
