Augsburg dial for latitudes 0-75 north
The compass has a degree scale divided 0-90-0-90-0. 32 points are marked, 16 by French initials, and north is further indicated by a fleur-de-lys. A brass needle indicates the magnetic variation, while a plain needle is surmounted by a brass conical pivot. Engraved around the compass are two towns with their latitudes: 'Perpignan 42.41'' and 'Rouen 49.27''. The latitude arc is divided 0- and its inside is engraved 'Toulon 43.6''. The obverse side of the hour ring is numbered clockwise IIII-XII, I-VIII, and the inner rim is numbered 4-12, 1-8. There is decoration on the hinge and a fleur-de-lys on the outer rim of the ring marks the latitude on the latitude arc.
The base of the compass and the back of the dial-plate are engraved with a table of latitudes of places in Europe. The dial has a black octagonal leather case with red velvet lining, a push-button clasp, and two hook fasteners. On its obverse side, the dial is signed 'Langlois AParis aux Galleries du Louvre'.
