'Bonaventure' (1683); Warship; Fourth rate; 50 guns
Scale 1:48. A full hull model of a 48 to 50-gun fourth rate warship (fl.1683) made entirely in wood and painted and varnished. The hull below the waterline is in the form of stylized framing and plank-on-frame above. The deck planking has been partly removed to show the deck beams and other features. Fittings include a figurehead in the form of a lion rampant; two gundecks, the lower one having undecorated gunports in the open position with red-painted inner faces, the upper gundeck having decoratively carved wreath ports; a decoratively painted frieze along the bulwarks in gilding on a red ground; channels for three masts; highly decorative and gilded quarter and stern galleries with mica glazing to the windows; and three stern lanterns. The model is mounted on its original wooden gilded crutches in the form of leaping dolphins, and displayed on a rectangular wooden baseboard.
