Butterfield dial
Butterfield dial for latitudes 40-60 north. This dial comprises an octagonal dial-plate with four concentric hour scales and a compass set into the plate at the southern end. The hinged gnomon, adjustable for latitudes 40-60, has a bird index to mark the latitude and folds flat when not in use. The compass has eight points marked by French initials and the needle is surmounted by a brass pivot. Magnetic variation is indicated by an arrow East of north. The reverse side of the dial-plate and the gnomon are decorated with an engraved shell pattern. Also on the reverse of the dial-plate and on the back of the compass is a table of latitudes for places in Europe, primarily French. The dial has a wooden case and is signed 'Butterfield AParis' on the obverse side of the dial-plate. It is purported to have belonged to an officer of Nelson's flagship HMS 'Victory'.
