Butterfield dial for latitudes 35˚-60˚ north, reverse
Butterfield dial for latitudes 35˚-60˚ north. The first hour scale is octagonal, the second oval and the third octagonal again. The spaces between the hour scales are filled with black enamel and there is a central circular acanthus motif. The compass is offset 8˚ west of north to allow for magnetic variation and its cardinal points are marked by Latin initials. The latitude scale on the gnomon is adjustable for latitudes 35˚-60˚, and the base of the compass is engraved with an acanthus flower. The remainder of the reverse side of the dial-plate is filled with a table of latitudes in two columns, such as 'Paris 49', 'Londres 51' and 'Madrid 41'.
