Cape Town from Table Bay
Butt's viewpoint is the end of a wooden jetty projecting into the Bay, seen on the right, with shipping off Cape Town and Table Mountain on the left and the Lion mountain on the right. Two further quays project on the left, one with a sailing ship moored bows in on its left and a steam tug alongside it on the right. The visible shipping all appears to be mercantile, flying the red ensign (which the Navy stopped using in 1864), though the vessel under sail in the centre might be HMS 'Sylvia', Butt's ship. The town includes both church spires and tall chimneys, suggesting early industrial development. Butt presumably drew the view as the 'Sylvia' made her way east via the Cape to begin her commission on the China Station.
