Captain Scott, George Simpson, Edgar Evans and Henry Bowers in harness with a fully laden sledge outside the north-west corner of the expedition hut at Cape Evans. The hut has a build-up of snow around the north side into which skis and ski-poles have been stuck. The trampled snow in the foreground has pony fodder scattered over it.
On this day they set off on an expedition to revisit the Farrer Glacier to check its rate of flow and Western Mountains. It provided Scott with the opportunity to 'bring my sledging impressions up to date (one loses details of technique very easily),...'
