Captain Sir John Franklin's cabin in the 'Erebus'
From the Illustrated London News, Saturday 24 May 1845
A view of Sir John Franklin's cabin on the lower deck of the exploration ship HMS 'Erebus' (1845) after her refit for the expedition to search for the North West Passage. It is a view from near the door to the Captain's Bed Cabin on the starboard side of the ship looking aft towards the stern windows. The central structure between the sets of windows is the trunking for the rudder through to the upper deck. In front of that was added drawers, on the door of which can be seen a portrait of either Queen Victoria or Lady Jane Franklin.
Below the windows are the built-in lockers, two of which are labelled "Pacific Charts No. 1 Erebus" and "Home & Arctic No.1 Erebus". On the right in the foreground is a table with a jacket, chart and navigation equipment on it.
