Captain William Rogers (b.1783)
A head-and-shoulders portrait to left wearing a black coat, black neckerchief and stock and white collar and cravat. The portrait is refreshingly direct and was probably done from life. Captain William Rogers of the 'Windsor Castle' mail packet was attacked by a French privateer, the 'Jeune Richard', 1 October 1807 off the coast of Barbados. Although the privateer was superior in terms of guns and manpower, Rogers and his remaining five unwounded men boarded the Frenchman, killed her captain, tore down her colours and forced the crew to go below.
