Cargo schooner

Scale: circa 1:124. A contemporary full hull model of a cargo schooner, carved from the solid by an amateur modelmaker. Model is decked, equipped and fully rigged (thought to be later). It is mounted on its original base and is complete with a contemporary glazed wooden display case. At this slightly unusual scale, the model depicts a vessel measuring 85 feet along the main deck by 24 feet in the beam and an approximate tonnage of 80 burden. The development of the schooner followed two separate lines: those rigged with square topsails as in the model, which evolved through the addition of a fore-and-aft mainsail; and the two-masted ships that were originally square-rigged, such as a brigantine, the totally fore-and-aft rigged schooner as favoured by North America, which evolved from the 17th century European vessel in the coastal trade of the Atlantic colonies. Models of 18th century merchant ships are extremely rare, and as a schooner model this example is thought to be unique.
