Chart of Malta
When this chart was published, Malta was at a crucial point in its history. In 1798, Napoleon expelled the Knights of the Order of St John from Malta and took control. In 1800 the Maltese revolted against the French and sought British assistance. returning from his victory at the Battle of the Nile, Nelson ordered a blockade of the French garrison in Valetta and starved them into submission. Malta came under British protection.
