Chart showing the Bristol and English Channel
In 1584, Waghenaer, a Dutch chart-maker, published a new type of printed sea atlas. 'De Spieghel der Zeevaert' (The Mariner's Mirror) aimed to contain everything a navigator would need, including charts, sailing directions, coastal views and navigational tables. It covert all the coasts of western Europe, from Spain to Norway.
