A caricature of sailors drinking rum on the mess deck. From 1655 to 1 August 1970, the sailors of Britain's Royal Navy received a daily ration of rum from the ship's purser. Sailors normally watered it down into a drink known as 'grog' to make the rum last longer. Since 1970, British ships have been dry.
