Compressor for chain cables
Scale: Unknown. A sectional model of a wooden hatch on deck with a corner reinforced with iron to pay out and retrieve chain cable from a chain locker below decks. The model is largely made of stained and polished mahogany whilst on the underside the compressing mechanism, bed plate and chain is made from brass. The compressor mechanism is worked by a pair of sheaves rigged with rope which is secured to a wooden pleat on the underside of the hatch beam.There is an engraved brass plaque screwed to the inboard face of the hatch coambing which reads "The patent compressor for checking & stopping chain cables invented by Mr. Wm. Batten H.M.Ship ISIS manufactured & sold by Mr. D. Bailey 272 Holborn London". There is also a small metal label which is illegible and is pinned to the underside of the deck frame.Original size: 95 mm x 260 mm x 274 mm
