Creamware mug

Creamware frog mug, with a black line painted around the rim, transfer-printed with a view of ships in action representing the Battle of the Trafalgar, 1805. It is inscribed 'Lord Nelson/Engaging the Combin'd/Fleets of Cape/TRAFALGAR', 'The young Alexander of France/May boast of his prowess in vain/When Nelson appears tis confest/That Britains are Lords of the Main'. The design is derived from an earlier engraving by Robert Sayer after Swaine showing Captain Richard Tyrell RN in 'Buckingham' engaging 'Florisssant', 'Aigrette' and 'Atalante' on 3 November 1758 (see PAF4612). A pottery model of a frog painted black is applied to the interior of the mug to surprise the drinker.
