'Cutty Sark' (1869) and a tug by John Everett zoom

'Cutty Sark' (1869) and a tug

A composite painting showing 'Cutty Sark', port starboard quarter on the right and a tug on the left in the foreground. 'Cutty Sark' is shown in full sail riding on the crest of a wave. Stylistically the painting reflects a number of artistic influences, the stylized arrangement of the waves resembling the Japanese prints of Hokusai. 'Cutty Sark' was one of the most famous merchant sailing ships of the nineteenth century.

'Cutty Sark' was designed by Hercules Linton and built by Scott and Linton at Dumbarton but was later rigged and finished for sea by Denny Brothers of Greenock in 1869. Measuring 212 feet in length by 36 feet in the beam and a tonnage of 963 gross, it was composite built, that is, wooden planks on iron frames.
