Davies, the carpenter, working on the hut

A view of the hut at Cape Evans under construction. Leading Shipwright Francis E. C Davies is nailing quilted seaweed over the inner boarding on the gable end of the hut. The frames for the unfinished lean-to for the acetylene plant can be seen. The long wall has been completed with its outer boarding and has a five foot pile of compressed forage bales stacked alongside it, two bales deep.

The print has a typed caption: 'Davis [sic], the carpenter, working on the hut. Jan. 10th 1911.'

Scott recorded on 10 January in his diary: 'The hut is progressing apace, and all agree that it should be a most perfectly comfortable habitation.' (page 84-85 for full description of construction).
