Daybreak after the bombardment of a port by Spanish ships
A painting showing the aftermath of a port bombardment. This powerful composition focuses on the relative calm after a night of battering. The scene is bathed in a golden glow as the sun rises to highlight the landscape. A Spanish ship lies at anchor in the central foreground of the painting and another is preparing to get underway on the left. A small ship's boat laden with soldiers is moving towards the Spanish ship. On the far left the buildings of the port are still smouldering after the attack. Although the sun is coming up, a crescent moon can still be seen through the morning clouds and smoke from the bombardment. The painting is signed with the artist's monogram.
