Dinner plate, part of a service belonging to HRH the Duke of Clarence, later William IV (1765-1837). In the centre, surrounded by gold decoration is a grisaille painting of a figure representing Hope, in classical dress, leaning with her right hand on the fluke of a large anchor. In the background the sea, with a British ship under sail. The plate has a scalloped rim and a border painted in blue, gold and white. The service is often erroneously described as the 'Nelson Service' and said to depict Lady Hamilton's 'attitudes'. It is also referred to as the 'Hope Service'. The maker's mark The maker's mark 'Flight' with a crown and crescent is painted on the base.
