Dinner plate, part of a service belonging to HRH the Duke of Clarence, later William IV (1765-1837)
Dinner plate, part of a service belonging to HRH the Duke of Clarence, later William IV (1765-1837). In the centre, surrounded by gold decoration is a grisaille painting showing a figure representing Hope, in classical dress, a large anchor resting beside her, raising her hands to heaven while a storm at sea rages behind her. In the distance, a disabled brig is struck by lightning. The plate has a scalloped rim and a border painted in blue, gold and white. The service is often erroneously described as the 'Nelson Service' and said to depict Lady Hamilton's 'attitudes'. It is also referred to as the 'Hope Service'. The maker's mark 'Flight' with a crown and crescent is painted on the base.
