Diptych dial, leaves Ib and IIa
Diptych dial for latitude 49 North. Rectangular ebony dial consisting of two leaves that fold together when not in use. The outer surfaces of the leaves are blank. Leaf Ib has a gold radial pattern engraved in an indented circle, surrounded by a gold border. There are also gold patterns in the spandrels. A broken green string gnomon is attached to the upper leaf. Leaf IIa displays a horizontal dial surrounding the compass, both of which are ivory. The horizontal dial is numbered clockwise IIII-XII, I-VIII and numbered in red with divisions in black. The compass has cardinal points only, named in Latin, and a small central compass rose. An arrow is drawn on to the plate to indicate magnetic variation at 10 East of North. The needle is blued, in the form of an arrow and surmounted by a square brass pivot. A glass plate, held in place by metal ring, covers all.
