Dutch flagships at anchor with boats alongside
Five Dutch flagships are depicted at anchor with their sails furled. There is a port bow view of the Admiral of the van on the left, a bow view of the Vice-Admiral of the centre on the right. The Admiral of the centre and both Admiral and Vice-Admiral of the rear are in the background. The shore is on the left horizon.
This is one of six drawings by van de Velde the Elder which approach the style of the Younger in the delicacy of the drawing and the fluidity of the wash. However, the hard-ruled horizons and the handling of the wash in the distant ships suggest the work of the Elder. All six drawings have been dated by the subjects and the similarity in manner to PAF6463.
