Dutch hooker, starboard stern quarter
Scale: unknown. A contemporary full hull model built plank on frame of a Dutch sailing cargo vessel known as a 'paviljoen poon', or hooker (1817). Carved into the upper stern planking is the inscription 'Door Tyd 1817 En Vlyt'. This is typical of the numerous working craft of the Netherlands, which would have worked on both inland and coastal waters. The hull is a distinctive rounded shape with a pronounced sheer and tumblehome, as well as the bluff rounded bow and stern. The single-masted sprit rig is used in conjunction with the large wooden leeboards on either side of the hull amidships as they would stop any sideways movement - known as leeway - due to the flat and shallow draught of the hull.
