Dutch squadron attacking a Spanish fortress
This picture appears to record a naval attack on a Spanish colonial fort, which is defended by Spanish ships. Although fighting between Spain and the rebellious United Provinces had virtually ceased in the Netherlands by 1609 they remained in a state of war until the Treaty of Munster was signed in 1648. Fighting in the Netherlands was sporadic but Spanish and Dutch colonial interests often clashed in Brazil and in the East.Adam Willaerts
