East Indiaman cargo vessel

Scale: 1:36. A contemporary full hull model of an East Indiaman cargo vessel (circa 1800) built plank on frame (?) and finished in the Georgian style. Model is decked and depicted with lower masts and tops stepped. At this scale, it represents a ship of the second class measuring 153 feet along the upper deck by 40 feet in the beam and an approximate tonnage of 1000 burden. Model restored in 1935.

The East Indiamen were the largest cargo carriers of their day and they were better armed and had a larger and more professional crew than the average merchant vessel. In addition to cargo they transported personnel and troops belonging to the Honourable East India Company, which had a monopoly in trade to India until 1813, and to China until 1833.
