Embarkation of Spanish troops
A Dutch interpretation of Spanish shipping set off the coast of an imaginary Mediterranean landscape. The grain of the panel beneath enhances the dramatic effect of the scene. A shaft of light from the sky to the right highlights the sea in front of the galley to the left. It is full of soldiers slashing through the darkness and redness of the image. The artist has used light to pick out masts, rigging and the group of figures preparing to embark in the foreground to the right.
