Equipment model
Scale: Unknown. A model of a windlass that is operated by a capstan using a mechanism that connects them. The model is made of mahogany that has been stained and polished a traditional red-brown, plated metal, and lacqueredbrass. The windlass is mounted at either end on stylised mahogany supports that are secured to a mahogany baseboard. The windlass is worked by a conventional ratchet mechanism turned by a pair of fine-toothed cogs either side of the centre ratchet. These cogs are worked by ratcheted levers that are moved along the cogs by their undulating movement caused by wheels at their opposite ends travelling over a wheel made up of inclinations and declinations. This wheel is set horizontally directly below the capstan and the axle of the wheel passes vertically through he centre of the capstan. By turning the capstan, the wheel is also turned causing an undulating movement in the levers that consequently turn the windlass. The levers, wheel, axle and capstan are all made of plated metal. The baseboard is square in shape with two corners cut-off at the after-end. A wood support is attached vertically to the rear-most edge of the baseboard and the top of this supports the wood deck on which the capstan is bedded.
