Fernando Po, Africa
One of three main islands off the west coast of Africa, Fernando Po was a Spanish possession. In 1841 Palmerston, in the hope of establishing a British trading colony on the island, offered to buy Fernando Po for Õú50,000. Spain refused and while the port still welcomed British naval vessels it also provided a refuge for certain Cuban and Brazilian slavers.
