Figurehead from HMS 'Bulldog'
The first-class paddle sloop HMS 'Bulldog' had a colourful career. IN October 1865, while bombarding rebels in Haiti, she rammed the enemy steamer 'Valorague'. As a result, she ran aground with a point-blank range of the rebel battery. Despite the disaster, she sank the 'Valorague' and another vessel, blew up the gunpowder magazine on shore, set fire to the town and dispersed rebel troops with grapeshot. By nightfall, with ammunition low, the 'Bulldog's captain, Charles Wake, scuttled the vessel and the US Navy rescued the crew. The words 'CAVE CANEM' (beware of the dog) are inscribed on the dog's broad collar.
