Four man rowing curragh, port broadside
Contemporary full hull model of a four man rowing curragh as used on the South West coast of Ireland. Built at a scale of 1:12, the model was made in about 1890. The hull is constructed with close lathe wooden framing with a tarred canvas covering externally.
The shape of the curragh varies from area to area along the west coast of Ireland. The Dingle type, with its long lines, is particularly suited to rough coastal waters and can be rowed by four men or sailed with a single-masted lugsail in the bow. It is not fitted with a rudder and is steered by pulling on single or pairs of oars. It was primarily used for fishing as well transportation of cattle and supplies between the coastal islands.
