The fourth and youngest son of Catherine de Medici and brother to Henry III of France, Francis was twenty-one years younger than the forty-five-year-old Queen Elizabeth I, but nonetheless a marriage scheme was seriously considered in order to forge a defensive treaty with the French monarchy.
