Full hull model, 8 oared racing vessel, port broadside
Scale: 1:16. Full hull model of an eight-oared racing vessel. The model is equipped with metal out-riggers, oars, rudder and sliding seats (mounted off centre), and has silk canvas decking at the bow and stern. It represents a rowing eight and would have been steered by the feet of the bow oarsman.
Ranging from a single scull up to the larger eight, these boats were raced regularly on the Thames by the local rowing clubs as well as the numerous University Boat Clubs. This particular type, the eight, is used by the crews of the University Boat Race between Oxford and Cambridge, a famous race that has been held on the Thames since 1829. In addition to this, the other highlight of the racing calendar is the Henley Royal Regatta where both the clubs and Universities from the UK, and abroad, race against each other. Rowing also became an Olympic sport in 1896.
