Full hull model of 'Leon' (1880) port three quarter view
Scale: 1:96. A full hull model of the cargo brigantine Leon (1880) made entirely in wood with metal and organic material fittings and varnished. The vessel is depicted on ways with six figures effecting repairs to the planking. The hull is made plank-on-frame and with a number of planks removed on the lower part of the starboard hull. A makeshift working platform is erected alongside, supported on a pair of tall horses with a ladder. The vessel is fully rigged as a two-masted brigantine but without sails. The bowsprit is also fully rigged. Fittings include five yards on the foremast, with two booms on the main; two rectangular deckhouses with a small hose at the stern for the helm; and a rudder with a cable attached to it. The model is mounted on realistically depicted launching ways which has two sections of tree trunks stored on its left-hand side and is displayed in a glazed table top display case. On the port and starboard quarters is the name 'Leon'. On the label is 'Wood brigantine Leon 302 tons: built 1880 at Laurvig, Norway. Scale 1/8" equals 1ft (Harold A Underhill 1950)'.
