General map of telegraph lines between Europe, India, Australia, and China
This map shows the rapid expansion of the telegraph network in the 15 years after the laying of the first submarine cable from England to France. Messages which had previously taken 10 weeks from London to Bombay and back by ship could now be telegraphed in minutes. Scale: circa 1:35000000. Mercator projection. Contents Note: colours indicate lines in operation and new lines.
