'Great Harry' (1514)
Scale: 1:120. Full hull model of an 80 gun galleon. Model is decked, equipped and rigged, with sails set and furled. Although intended to portray the Henri Grace a Dieu or Great Harry built during the reign of Henry VIII, the bow, fine stern and reduced castles suggest a warship of a later date. Probably a 19th century reconstruction, based on an engraving published in 1756. Plaque inscribed "Great Harry. A copy of this was exhibited at the exhibition of 1851 in London. This model was lent to King William IV by Arthur Howe Holdsworth MP for and Governor of Dartmouth Castle": the copy referred to is also in the collection, SLR0236. The model is painted white below the water line whilst the upper works are in a natural wood and varnished. The bulwark decoration and castleations have a black background with decorative features highlighted in red and gold paint. It is rigged with a royal standard at the stern and various decorative penants and flags from the mast head, yards and from the rigging.
