Greenwich Pier

'The Greenwich Company's Steam Packets, The Greenwich, Royal Tar, Gipsy, Water Lily and Fly - with the New Pier, Hospital, Churches &c &c'. Greenwich gained its first pier in 1836 and George Basevi's St Mary's Church, which can be seen behind it in the centre was built in 1839 (demolished 1936, only the St Mary's gate of the Park preserves its name, with the statue of Wiliam IV now on the site). The buildings along Fisher Lane, to the left of the Pier here ending with the old Ship Tavern, were also demolished in the early 1840s and certainly gone by 1848. The tall one in the centre, just left of the flag on the Pier, is a puzzle to be solved. The vessels illustrated are the 'Greenwich', 'Royal Tar', 'Gipsy', 'Water Lily' and 'Fly'.
