Halkett's boat-cloak or cloak-boat
This eccentric contraption was designed for navigating across bays and rivers. Haklett, a naval man, successfully tested it in the Bay of Biscay in 1844, but it was never widely used. Explorer John Rae found a similar invention, Haklett's inflatable boat, an invaluable piece of Arctic kit. Franklin also took one with him in 1845.
