Hilt of scimitar
Turkish scimitar, which belonged to Haj Mahmud Beg (active 1768) and Lieutenant William Tottenham (1812-1847). The hilt of the scimitar is of the 'Mameluke' type, with a pink horn grip. The curved steel blade is eastern in style, narrowing from 41mm at the shoulder to 32mm and then increasing rapidly to 41mm at 267mm from the point. The obverse of the blade is engraved with a temple-like design with quotations from the Koran on each side (Help is from God and Victory is near...What God wills..., Trust in God), and 'Mustafa 1182', which refers to the maker and the date of manufacture 1768-1769.
