HMS 'Caledonia' (1808)
Scale: Unknown. A model made in two halves showing two designs for the circular stern for HMS 'Caledonia' (1808), 1st rate; 120 guns, made entirely in wood with metal fittings and painted in realistic colours. The hull, rudder, and underside are painted black with off-white stripes along the three gundecks. The top of the model is also painted off-white. Two gunports on either side of the gundecks are depicted, with a further two on either side of the upper two aft decks. There are two gunports at the stern. All depicted gunports are depicted blanked off, without lids, and painted grey. The stern galleries are arranged on three decks, the middle deck having railings. The port side galleries are inline with the port stern quarter profile. The starboard galleries are recessed forming a more contoured starboard stern quarter profile. The two halves of the model are displayed on a shield-shaped backboard, the ground painted cream with a stained and varnished wood edge. A hand-painted metal plaque attached to the backboard reads 'Circular stern "HMS 'Caledonia" renamed "Dreadnought" shewing two designs for'.
