HMS 'Cerberus' (1868)

Scale: 1:48. A shipbuilders half block model of HMS 'Cerberus' (1868), 4 guns, a coastal monitor vessel. The model is made in wood with some metal fittings. The hull below the waterline is finished in a brass colour while the upperworks to deck level are painted black. The model is fitted with a rudder at the stern on a frame, together with a propeller shaft supported by a bracket. There is a single deck has a central citadel superstructure on which is mounted a pair of circular turrets fitted with two guns in each. There is a small raised deck above the guns running longitudinally, surrounded by a metal stanchion on which is fitted a single stump mast and funnel, charthouse, conning bridge and a pair of ventilation cowlings. Nearly all of the flat horizontal surfaces are painted black except for the aft section of the main deck which is painted creamy-white. Nearly all of the vertical surfaces are painted a creamy-white light brown colour. There are a number of fittings on the main deck which include three circular skylights with conical glazed frames above, an incomplete set of bollards and a metal stanchion guardrail running from the bow to roughly amidships. The model is mounted on a wooden backboard painted a creamy-white, with a stained and varnished mahogany edging. Label missing. The backboard shows evidence of fixtures to the model which are now missing as well as a large area at the stern which was either a modification to the existing model, or may even suggest that the back board was taken from another model. The model has been recently restored with the additions and repairs finished in a natural wood colour.
