HMS 'Cumberland' (1842)

Scale: 1:48. A contemporary half block model of HMS 'Cumberland' (1842), a 70-gun two-decker ship of the line. The hull is carved from a solid block of wood(?) and is painted a metallic bronze colour below the main wales separated by a thin white line. The topsides are painted black, interspersed by the two gundecks highlighted by creamy white horizontal bands with gunports let in and painted black. The gunports above the three sets of channels(one missing and another modern replacement), have been cut into the upperworks and vary in shape. The bow is fitted with head rails just aft of the half bust male figurehead, painted gold, with a stump bowsprit set above. The main deck is flush and fitted with two stump masts painted a creamy white colour with the same for the raised quarter deck. The stern is complete with a carved quarter gallery with raised mouldings and painted black together with a rudder fitted to the sternpost complete with gudgeons and pintles. The whole model is mounted on a rectangular wooden backboard which is painted a creamy white surrounded by a stained moulded edging, on which is inscribed "HMS "Cumberland" Tons 2214 Built 1842".
