HMS 'Leviathan', port broadside
Scale: 1:48. Builder's full hull model of HMS 'Leviathan' (1901), an armoured cruiser. A tremendously impressive model not only for its sheer size - its almost three-and-a-half metres long - but for the considerable attention to detail. Typically with this style of model, a large number of the metal fittings have been silver- or gold-plated, or made from copper. This was a deliberate attempt by shipyards, when they exhibited at the various international trade fairs, to catch the eye of potential buyers for foreign navies. Everything from shutter telegraphs to chicken coops are skilfully reproduced here and, although the model has suffered shrinkage cracks from the length of time it has been on permanent display, it is in very good condition given its age and fragility. Such a model would have been a complex and costly undertaking even for a major shipyard like John Brown's with its large modelmaking workshop.
