HMS 'Raleigh' (1873)
Scale: 1:48. A half block model of the port side of the 22-gun frigate HMS 'Raleigh' (1873), made entirely in wood and painted dark brown below the waterline, a narrow white stripe above and black above the waterline. The paint has a crazed patina and losses, particularly in the upper black area, and what appears to be an impact mark in the area of the waterline. Hull details include a row of square portholes and gunports, propeller and rudder. Other fittings include stump bowsprit, foremast, mainmast and mizzen mast, and two lozenge-shaped funnels, painted black. The model is displayed on a backboard painted off-white with a mahogany-stained frame, the right-hand edge of which is missing. On plaque 'Raleigh - Frigate - 1873. Iron built ship with wood sheathing all over. Built at Chatham. Ended seagoing service in 1899. Sold in 1905. First Armament: - 9in., 14-7in., 6-6in ML. Later Armament 8-7in ML., 8-6in BL., 8-5in BL. Dimensions: Length 298ft Beam 49ft Displacement 5260 tons. Speed 15 knots'. Plaque not currently attached to backboard.
