HMS 'Royal Katherine'
Because this ship was broken up in 1698 the painting is thought to be the earliest that can be attributed to him, although it could have been done later from drawings: if not it suggests he was working earlier than can be otherwise shown. It is signed, bottom left, 'H. Vale fec'.
